Overview

The following 7 galleries represent Mona Serageldin’s analog 35mm slide collection on urban upgrading, as arranged in slide case M29: “Bahrain, Al Madina Al Munnawara.”

This collection covers land reclamation, urban fabric documentation, and upgrading projects in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. Images in the collection provide both detail views of city structures and broad overviews of urban landscapes and neighborhoods.

Gallery 1 covers Medina, Saudia Arabia, while Galleries 2-7 cover Bahrain, including the cities of Isa Town, Muharraq, Manama, and Arad.

GALLERY M29-3: Muharraq, Bahrain (August 1986)

Photographs upgrading areas in Muharraq, Bahrain from August 1986. The gallery covers housing and mosques, including views of the Siyadi House complex and Murad Majlis, views along the coastal road, and the port and mudflat channel. Portions of the gallery cover Muharraq souqs (street markets) as well as the proposed upgrading area of Sheikh Isa in central Muharraq. Another section contains color-coded “Elements of Urban Fabric” graphics of Muharraq neighborhoods. Overall, views shows building facades and details, courtyards and rooftops, streetscapes and alleyways, storefronts, and construction, along with views of boats in the harbor and dhow boat maintenance.

This gallery covers land reclamation and upgrading projects around Manama, Bahrain from 1982 through 1986, including the central Fareej el-Hammam district, the neighborhood of Ras Al Rumman, and the nearby village of Sanabis. It shows views of the city center, old area windtowers, building regulations, the corniche road towards Isa Town, and Old Ports for Manama and Sanabis. Photographs of upgrading areas also show facades of old and new housing, storefronts, streets and buildings under construction and renovation, and storefronts.
