6 galleries of digitized film slides covering historic districts and housing typologies in China

Overview

The following 6 galleries represent Mona Serageldin’s 35mm film slide collection on housing typologies and Islamic architecture, as arranged in slide case M41, “China,” consisting of color photographs of Beijing and western China.

The collection covers residential contexts, primarily in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in northwestern China, as well as Xi’an and Beijing, from a Serageldin’s visit there in November 1981. The photographs document Islamic architecture and village life in Central Asia, as well as historic districts and landmarks throughout China.

Gallery 1 covers a variety of locations in China, while Gallery 2 shows Beijing, and Galleries 3-6 cover locations in western and northwestern China.

Photographs broadly of China from November 1981, including Beijing, Xi’an, and unspecified locations in northwestern Xinjiang. Images show views from a tour boat, portraits of Mona Serageldin and others, general residential and temple views, and aerial views. Two later sections cover cave dwellings, or farmers’ caves, including commune buildings, schools, and surrounding villages.

This gallery covers the capital city of Beijing in northern China from November 1981. It covers general views, residential areas, and historic landmarks around the city. These latter locations include the Great Wall, the Ming tombs, the Temple of Heaven, the Forbidden City, the Imperial Palace, and the Niujie Mosque. It also shows village and commune housing near Beijing. Views include streetscapes, building exteriors, river landscapes, and overviews of architecture.

This gallery covers Xi’an, the capital city of the Shaanxi province in western China, from November 1981. Photographs show the Huaqing Pool and nearby villages and temples, including hot springs and Huaqing Palace, old housing, the Islamic quarter housing and Friday prayer, and a mosque. Views include overviews of landscapes and villages, streetscapes, building facades, and housing interiors.
