Informal Housing
1982-1988
3 galleries of digitized film slides covering informal housing in the Middle East, North Africa, and Jamaica
Overview
The following 3 galleries represent Mona Serageldin’s analog 35mm slide collection on informal settlements, as arranged in slide case M07: “Informal Housing.“
This selection of photographs includes housing diagrams, statistical maps, and images of residential structures and urban life, demonstrating the rich variety of housing throughout the Middle East, North Africa, Jamaica, and many other regions.
Galleries 1 and 2 represent a topical selection of photographs curated from urban development research trips throughout the mid-1980s, and document informal housing typologies over time and across geographic regions.
Gallery 3 documents informal housing and urban upgrading projects in Jamaica from 1982.

GALLERY M07-1: Informal Housing, Part 1 (1984-1988)
58 images
Serageldin’s curated selection of images and graphics on informal housing and settlements, gathered between 1984-1988 and covering Egypt, France, and Morocco.
Egypt: These images were selected to accompany a presentation at an Aga Khan Award for Architecture seminar in Malaysia. They show housing exteriors and streetscapes.
France: These photographs, attributed to Samir Abdulac, show apartment buildings in Paris, along with a black and white image of previous informal housing. The building of the Paris périphérique, or ring road, in the 1970s displaced inhabitants of informal settlements on the land.
Morocco: These slides cover Casablanca, Rabat, and Fes, showing neighborhood overviews and housing interiors and exteriors. Graphics from this section include housing layouts and urban development maps.
