South Africa Case Studies
1998-2003
6 galleries of digitized film slides covering small town case studies in South Africa
Overview
The following 6 galleries represent Mona Serageldin’s 35mm film slide collection on small town housing projects and economic activities, as arranged in slide case M17: “South Africa Case Studies,” consisting of color photographs of the Eastern Cape and Western Cape provinces.
The collection documents municipal infrastructure upgrading initiatives, micro-enterprises, and housing projects in South Africa from 1998-2003. The photographs document field visits and site overviews as part of I2UD’s evaluation of grant-funded programs and urban upgrading strategies for those locations in the late 1990s and early 2000s. They show infrastructure improvements, new and old housing, and a variety of economic activities, in many cases in the contexts of the structural legacies of historic Moravian mission settlements from the 19th century.
For one of the towns, Elim (Gallery M17-2), in Western Cape, I2UD submitted a report on upgrading initiatives there to UN-Habitat’s Best Practices Local Leadership Programme in 2001.
Galleries 1, 2, 3, and 5 cover towns in Western Cape, while Galleries 4 and 6 cover towns in Eastern Cape.
