Overview

The following 5 galleries represent Mona Serageldin’s 35mm film slide collection on city revitalization, as arranged in box M27, “France: Peinture Rouge, St. Denis, Lyon, Datar, Plans, New Towns, Defense, Montpellier, Defense, Bonneval,” and consist of color photographs and planning maps and diagrams. Note that only some of the locations in the box title are included in this digital collection.

This selection of photographs documents infrastructure development and housing revitalization in communes and towns in the Paris Metropolitan region, including the northern suburbs of Aubervilliers and Saint-Denis, the planned communities of Marne-la-Vallée and Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, La Défense business district, as well as the commune of Bonneval south of Paris. Views in the collection include streetscapes, a variety of housing styles and conditions, urban infrastructure under renovation or construction, and aerial views.

Many of these locations have been included as case studies in I2UD’s executive training courses throughout the 1990s and 2000s on strategic planning, local development partnerships, and urban revitalization, among other topics.

GALLERY M27-1: Saint-Denis, France (1991-2003)

This gallery documents the commune of Saint-Denis in the suburbs north of Paris, France from 1991 through 2003. Photographs cover transportation and housing in the region, including the Autoroute du Nord and a Réseau Express Régional (Regional Express Network) project site for implementing a rail transit system around Paris and its suburbs. A variety of housing developments are represented, including low-income, public, and private housing developments. The gallery also shows the Saint-Denis commercial center, canals, and industrial zones, and the Stade de France. Views include portraits of residents, building interiors and exteriors, streetscapes, and maps and diagrams.

GALLERY M27-3: France New Towns (1987-2001)

This gallery documents New Towns (planned settlements) of France from 1987 through 2001, including Marne-la-Vallée east of central Paris and Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines west of Paris. Photographs of Marne-la-Vallée show the commune of Noisy-le-Grand, signature public housing architecture (including the Bofill and Camembert buildings), the Cité Descartes science park, and multimodal transportation hub under construction. Views in the gallery include streetscapes, building exteriors and interiors, aerial views, and maps and diagrams.

It contains photographs of residential and commercial buildings of the town, streetscapes, and improvement initiatives, as well as graphics of improvement plans and topographical maps for Bonneval and the surrounding metropolitan region south of Paris.
