Housing and Historic Districts

1984-1998

5 galleries of digitized film slides covering housing and historic neighborhoods in the Middle East

Overview

The following 5 galleries represent Mona Serageldin’s 35mm film slide collection on large housing projects and historic neighborhoods, primarily in the Middle East, as arranged in box M05, “Historic Districts, Qadhimiya, Babelsheikh, Jiddah Hajj, Aleppo, Rusafa, Al Azhar Renovation, New Orleans,” and consist of color and black and white photographs, as well as graphics for presentation slides.

A small portion of this collection covers examples of large housing projects. Gallery 1 consists of presentation slides for a portion of the seminar “Design, Technology, and Logistics for Large Housing Projects,” held at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts from July 23-27, 1984. Images cover a broad range of contexts, and locations included are primarily in North Africa and South and Western Asia.

The majority of this collection concerns historic districts in the context of urban development, balancing the maintenance of traditional housing and old urban fabrics with meeting ongoing human housing and infrastructure needs. Galleries 2-5 consist of visual case studies of historic districts in North Africa and Western Asia: the Bab al-Faraj quarter in Aleppo, Syria; the Rusafa and Kadhimiya neighborhoods of Baghdad, Iraq; the cities of Mecca and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; and renovations of al-Azhar Mosque in Cairo, Egypt.
